The newest FPV (First-Person View) drone club in the UK, Tiny Whoop Staffordshire (TWS), is already making waves. Their mission to share the joy of drone flight with the local community took off in style this November, when they teamed up with the Staffordshire University Computing Club for a special Try’n’Fly session.

We were thrilled to help deliver the event and introduce a whole new crowd to the fun of flying FPV drones.

Taking Over the Student Union

With the help of the Computing Club committee, we transformed the Staffordshire University Student Union bar into a buzzing drone arena. The space was perfect—an enclosed area with high ceilings and a glass partition for safe spectating. This setup made it easy to manage flights and keep both pilots and drones safe while ensuring everyone had a clear view of the action.

Beginners’ Race Track

We kicked things off with our favourite line-of-sight training drones, perfect for beginners aged five and up. Check out our learner drones here.

After clearing most of the tables, we set up TWS’s glowing LED race gates—a fan-favourite setup that creates an exciting, video game–like flying environment. The atmosphere was electric, and everyone was eager to get airborne.

Try’n’Fly: Learning the Basics

With a mix of coaching, laughter, and a few spectacular crashes, we soon had a room full of budding pilots confidently taking off, landing, and maneuvering their drones.

We started with the fundamentals—taking off and landing—before progressing to coordinated movement, keeping the drone’s front facing away from the pilot. Once they mastered that, it was time for yaw control, allowing the drone to rotate and change direction.

Of course, this led to the occasional mid-air confusion and crash, but our drones are built tough. And with a few litter pickers on hand, flipping them over between flights became part of the fun.

Level Up: FPV Flight

Several participants picked up the basics so quickly that we couldn’t resist introducing them to the next level—FPV flying using the BetaFPV Cetus Pro FPV Kit. Explore the kit here.

Once fitted with FPV goggles, pilots experienced the incredible “drone’s-eye view,” flying as if they were onboard. The Student Union bar instantly transformed into a real-world video game—a thrilling new experience for everyone involved.

By the end of the session, each new pilot successfully navigated through the race hoops and proudly graduated as FPV flyers.

Building a Community Around Flight

As we packed up, we chatted with the Staffs Uni Computing Club committee and members. It was fantastic to hear how much they enjoyed the experience—several even planned to join future Tiny Whoop Staffs events to continue their FPV journey.

This kind of engagement is exactly why we love doing what we do—giving people a chance to learn, explore, and fly together.

Powered by Partnerships

Events like this wouldn’t be possible without support from our 2026 partners Torishima and BetaFPV. A huge thank you to BetaFPV, whose Cetus Pro FPV kit makes it easy for anyone—from total beginner to skilled racer—to learn, improve, and enjoy drone flying all with one kit. We’re proud to stock their gear in our shop and help new pilots take their first steps into the world of FPV.

Help Us Share Free Flights

We volunteer our time to run these community sessions and provide free flight experiences across the UK. While we’re happy to do it, travel and equipment costs can add up—and that’s where you can help.

If you’d like to support our mission, consider making a small donation. In return, you’ll receive our exclusive shiny blue BTW Club sticker—a badge of honour for those who help grow and support the FPV community. Get your BTW Blue Sticker here.

Together, we can help more people experience the magic of FPV flight — one Try’n’Fly at a time.
