It’s not every day a shiny new drone lands on our doorstep, so hats off to Caddx for boldly going where no manufacturer has gone before and trusting us with their latest creation. We cracked open the box ready to put it through its paces—and as always, to give you the most honest, hands-on verdict we can muster.
Caddx Protos First Impressions: A Fully-Loaded Flight Pack
Straight out of the box, the Protos kit radiates that “premium gadget smell”—you know the one. Everything you need to lift off is tucked neatly inside:
Controller
FPV Goggles
Protos Drone
Three drone batteries
Battery charger
Goggle battery
Spares, cables, and manual
A travel-friendly carry case
It’s the sort of all-in-one bundle that whispers, “Take me outside right now.”
We handed the kit to our regular whoopers in the club (the people who crash for sport and call it “testing ”) and captured their first reactions in the accompanying video. Spoiler: there were some raised eyebrows—in the good way.
Build, Video, and That Sweet FPV Glow
Across the board, the members were impressed with both the build quality and the video feed. In fact, the image clarity surpassed every other whoop-class drone we regularly fly. Yes, even the HDZero rigs—though to be fair, the Protos trades a bit of latency for that picture-perfect feed, making it better suited to casual or beginner pilots rather than latency-sensitive racers.
But the unexpected star of the show? The goggles. The screen is huge, crisp, and bright enough to make your phone screen jealous. The only hiccup is the armed/disarmed icon, which toggles between white and grey—occasionally blending together like a shy chameleon. Still, once you're flying, the FPV experience is chef’s kiss.
They’re also lightweight without feeling fragile. And let’s be honest: the LED bar on the front makes you look like you walked straight out of TRON—which, frankly, should be standard on all goggles moving forward. The animated splash screen is also a big win, sparing us from the traditional “analogue snowstorm of doom” while booting up.
Durability: Surprisingly tank-like
The Protos drone endured a full evening of unapologetic abuse from our club members—and emerged with zero broken parts. That’s a major green flag for beginners, who will absolutely be battering this thing into walls, floors, trees, pets, relatives, and possibly themselves. Knowing it can survive that kind of punishment adds a big dose of confidence.
The Curveball: Video Cuts on Impact
Here’s where things got… interesting.
Every time the drone experienced even a minor bump, the video feed instantly cut out. For pilots used to staying visually connected to their craft no matter what shenanigans it’s up to, losing vision mid-flight is downright unnerving. Imagine sneezing while wearing VR goggles and suddenly finding yourself blindfolded—same energy.
After chatting with Caddx, we learned this is an intentional feature to protect the VTX during crashes. For brand-new pilots with no preconceived expectations, this may not be a big deal. But for seasoned flyers, it’s something you’ll want to brief newcomers on: If you lose video, disarm ASAP. Several times our testers tapped a wall lightly enough to keep flying, but still lost video—leaving them piloting a rogue whoop via pure guesswork and auditory clues. Not ideal.
Final Verdict
After a full night of flying, crashing, laughing, and interrogating the hardware, the consensus from the club was clear: the Caddx Protos kit is legitimately good. Experienced pilots found it a tad slow and weren’t thrilled by the video auto-cutoff, but for newcomers? This is an excellent, durable, confidence-building starter kit with top-tier goggles and impressive video quality.
If someone unwraps a Protos kit this Christmas, tell them to bring it down to BTWclub—we’ll happily show them the ropes (and probably borrow their goggles).
Massive thanks again to Caddx for sending the kit over. And if you want one of your own, good news: we’re giving it away at the BIRD event in January. Drop by, say hi, and you might just fly home with a brand-new Protos.
Firmware & Updates from Caddx
This Google drive link has the latest firmware update (09/12/25) and Betaflight flashing tool for the Protos drone:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TDV05TQLEi_9BSbKMXF6xyuLy_Apv9VJ?usp=sharing
It has optimized latency and image quality, after the firmware update.
However, the image performance at night will be decreased a bit after that.
If you use the Betaflight flashing tool for the Protos you can enjoy better Acro mode.
However, once this step is taken, the position hold mode will be invalid, and it could not return to the original set.
For pro pilots that want great video in a tiny package, this could be a great option!
